What is Alpha Lipoic Acid Lotion?

Alpha lipoic acid lotion is a skin care product made from alpha lipoic acid, a strong antioxidant which is naturally produced in the human body and can also be found in a number of foods and vegetables. This lotion and other related products such as alpha lipoic acid cream, alpha lipoic acid body toning lotion, and alpha lipoic acid hand lotion are said to be effective in revitalizing the skin and delaying the aging process. Applying alpha lipoic acid lotion to the skin is helpful to a certain degree in clearing wrinkles, fine lines and scars.

Being soluble in both water and fat, alpha lipoic acid can be easily absorbed in the skin. The antioxidant properties of alpha lipoic acid are said to help tackle free radicals that are responsible for skin aging, and to assist with the production of more collagen. Using alpha lipoic acid skin lotion may also help with bringing down skin inflammations and in treating acne.

There is, however, a need for further clinical studies than have been presently done regarding the exact efficacy of alpha lipoic acid skin care products. The results so far have not been completely consistent, not enough in any case to deem these products as a definite cure for wrinkles. Another issue to consider in the actual necessity of taking alpha lipoic acid supplements or of using alpha lipoic acid lotion topically, when the substance is already produced by the human body. While using alpha lipoic acid is not known to irritate the skin like, for example, retin and some other skin care products, there have been no studies about long-term side effects if any. Pregnant women and people with serious medical conditions should preferably ask their medical practitioner before using alpha lipoic acid lotion.

Cosmetics like alpha lipoic acid lotion can be rather expensive. They can, however, be easily prepared at home using alpha lipoic powder and other easily available ingredients. To prepare alpha lipoic acid lotion, aside from the powder, it is necessary to have wax, vegetable oils like coconut or almond, essential oils and water.

The first step is to melt wax and the oil in boiling water, and then stir in the alpha lipoic acid powder until the mixture becomes well-blended and milky. If a fragrant lotion is required, essential oils should also be added at this stage. The liquid should then be allowed to cool before it is bottled.
